🌊 Raising Ocean Explorers: The Next Generation of Divers Begins with Us By Reko Ponton, The Dive Guide
Over the years, I’ve been privileged to usher hundreds of divers through some of the most wondrous underwater sites in the Caribbean and Mexico. But some of my best dives? They’ve been with children who are taking their first breath underwater.
There’s power in seeing the eyes of a young diver light up when they float weightless next to a sea turtle or navigate a coral reef. It’s also a reminder that our oceans’ fate depends on the next generation.
Making the Ocean Accessible to Young Divers
Recently, I’ve been inspired by youth-centered programs such as DiveN2Life and the BIMS Immersion Program—initiatives that provide young people with access to diving and marine science, often for the first time. These programs are no mere certifications; they’re springboards to becoming the scientists, conservationists, and confident ocean adventurers of the future.
I wanted to provide something that was the same pretty transformational experience at The Dive Guide. That’s why I’m now offering certification support for adults and children, along with family dive trips that are intentionally educational, inspiring, and safe.
But safety is important — as geared as diving may be, it’s not one-size-fits-all.
🩺 Is Scuba Diving Safe for Children?
It’s a question I have heard more times than I can count from parents: “Is it safe for my kid to dive?” The answer is yes — if it’s done thoughtfully and responsibly.
Kids as young as 8 can start diving by enrolling in programs such as PADI’s Bubblemaker and Seal Team. But diving with children isn’t simply shrinking adult diving. There are serious medical, psychological, and developmental considerations.
Children should have a full medical examination and show emotional maturity before diving, according to the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUMS). Some conditions — such as epilepsy, panic disorders, certain heart or respiratory problems, and ADHD — may heighten risks. That’s why I always recommend a medical clearance before enrolling your child.
🧠 What Readies a Child to Take the Plunge?
Diving requires a cool head and a clear thought process, with quick decisions. And while those under 15 must scuba with an adult or dive pro, they must still be able to respond to situations independently when the bubble hits the gurgle.
As a parent, it’s a good time to check in:
Is your child that interested?
Are they calm in the water and can follow instructions?
Are you prepared to support them, not pressure them?
If the answer is yes, they could be ready for their first dive adventure.
⚠️ Recognizing the Hazards for Young Divers
There are certain risks specific to children when it comes to diving. As a guide and rescue diver, I pay special attention to:
Poor equalization, often leading to ear injuries
Fast climbs caused by panic or stability problems
Hypothermia because children lose heat quickly
Without conservative dive planning, decompression sickness is a risk, and it is rare.
That’s why, whenever I teach, I always move very slowly, step-by-step—starting in calm, warm, shallow situations and placing a heavy emphasis on comfort and control.
✅ Kid-Friendly Diving: Best Practices for Safety
Using these safety guidelines at The Dive Guide, I ensure every child’s dive experience is a positive and safe one:
✔️ Before training, a medical clearance
✔️ Adequately fitting equipment with thermal protection
✔️ Adult certified divers: 2 per youth diver
✔️ Limited dive site conditions and easy entries/exits
✔️ Pools first for confidence building before open water
✔️ Family-first orientation that ensures that parents know everything
🌴 Dive In As a Family
If you’ve ever wanted to share the ocean with your kids, this is the time. I provide family dive packages in Grand Cayman & the Yucatán Peninsula that incorporate:
Complete certifying support for kids, young adults, and grown-ups
Shallow dives (for example, shore entries or calm reef dives)
Boxed logistics: gear rental, coaching, and travel planning
And underwater photography sessions to catch your family’s underwater memories
