My Origin Story :-) , How I got into Diving
I moved to Grand Cayman or the Cayman Islands and on my first Saturday there my boss took me conch diving in East End. It was the first time I swam the waters of Grand Cayman and I was hooked. I didn't do to bad and quickly found my conch allowance so I floated and hung from the kayak by one one hand and my GoPro in the other as a large reef shark approached. I was so shook, everything just kind of went slow-mo as it swam past me and I totally forgot to grab that moment on video. That day, I learned that shark really weren't bothered by humans, nor did they really care that I'm there.
From then on I would spent hours floating just above the vibrant coral reefs, enthralled by sea life, but, it was never enough. I wanted to go further, deeper, see the world unencumbered below the water's surface, free from the bounds of breathing. Driven by this insatiable curiosity, I decided to become a scuba diver—and it totally transformed my life.
One of the dives I will never forget is: a night dive under the full moon at a dive site called “Babylon”, a stunning pinnacle that springs up away from the deep sea wall in the waters of Grand Cayman. As my buddy, Garth, and I descended into the darkness, the moonlight illuminated the reef with a surreal, otherworldly glow. Lobster and giant crabs ran up and down the wall and over coral, a world quietly conducting its night work. When a small shark swam silently between us, just to check us out, I felt a connection I couldn't articulate with a world few people experience. That dive cemented my passion and my purpose—something I knew I had to share with others.
While some divers find getting past the fear as the most difficult part of learning to scuba dive, I experienced only excitement. Each dive was like a gift, a wonderful opportunity to witness the breathtaking beauty and boundless wonders of the underwater world. Fear was not the defining feature of my experience—it was joy and increasing wonder.
My belief in God is also deeply connected with my passion for diving. When I'm underwater, I'm reminded of the wonder and complexity of His creation. I've learned humility and gained a deep appreciation for life, of any kind, of all kind, from the sea. With each dive, I'm reminded of the importance of protecting our oceans—it's not only a privilege, but a responsibility we all share.
